Description

Lilium OT mixed, also known as Oriental-Trumpet lilies or Orienpets, are created through the crossbreeding of Oriental lilies (Lilium orientalis) and Trumpet lilies (Lilium longiflorum). These hybrids combine the best attributes of their parent species, presenting large, fragrant flowers in a wide array of colours including pink, red, orange, yellow, and white. They typically reach heights of 4 to 6 feet (about 120 to 180 cm) and bloom from mid to late summer. Lilium OT mixed lilies prefer well-drained soil and thrive in full sun to partial shade conditions. They are adaptable to various climates but may benefit from mulching in colder areas. Consistent watering and adequate spacing to ensure good air circulation are crucial for their optimal growth and profuse flowering. These lilies are highly valued for their aesthetic appeal and delightful fragrance, making them ideal choices for enhancing garden borders, beds, or containers.

The ideal planting time for Lilium bulbs is from winter into spring. This will allow the bulbs to establish roots and have sufficient time to settle into the soil and prepare for growth when temperatures start to rise. Do not allow bulbs to dry out before planting. If required, store them in a cool spot. This is very important, as lilies do not have a dormant cycle like many other bulbs.

Plant Lilium OT Mixed in well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Choose a sunny garden spot with 6-8 hours of daily sunlight. Dig holes 10-20 cm deep, spacing bulbs 15-20 cm apart, and plant with pointed ends up. Water thoroughly after planting. For pots, use well-draining soil with drainage holes, plant bulbs at the same depth, and water well. Position pots in a sunny location and fertilise as directed for healthy growth. Protect potted plants from strong winds and heat to ensure robust flowering.

To effectively fertilise Lilium OT Mixed, begin in early spring when new growth emerges, using a balanced fertiliser to encourage robust bloom development. Repeat this application just before flowering to enhance flower quality and size. After flowering, apply fertiliser once more to support bulb energy storage for the next season. Dilute water-soluble fertiliser according to instructions and apply it around the base of the plants, ensuring thorough watering to facilitate nutrient absorption. Alternatively, use granular fertiliser around the plants, being careful to avoid direct contact with stems to prevent burning.

To plant Liliums in pots, use a 30-35 cm container with drainage holes filled with well-draining potting mix or peat moss, perlite, and compost. Plant bulbs 15-20 cm deep, spaced 15-20 cm apart—water thoroughly without waterlogging, and place in a sunny, wind-protected spot. Fertilise at planting and in early spring, and after flowering, remove spent blooms and trim yellowing foliage. Top-dress with fertiliser, allow plants to naturally die down in the garden, or protect from frost in cold climates. Indoors in early winter, water well after top-dressing, anticipating growth in the next season.

Lilium OT Mixed generally does not need frequent dividing. While they often thrive and bloom from the same bulb for years without separation, dividing during dormancy after flowering and foliage dieback can rejuvenate growth and prevent overcrowding. Lift bulbs carefully, separate them ensuring each division has healthy roots and bulb portions, and replant in well-draining soil. Dividing every 3-4 years or as needed helps maintain plant health and promotes robust flowering.

After flowering (or when cutting flowers for display), cut about halfway down the stem. Enough leaves should remain for the bulb to develop so that it can produce flowers the following year.

Supplied as a pack of nine dormant bulbs.

How to Plant

Liliums thrive when planted in clusters, making them excellent companion plants. Whether in pots or garden beds, planting them in groups ensures proper growth. Position the bulbs so they lean slightly inward to encourage mutual support for the tall stems, and place a stake in the center for additional support as they grow. An ideal location is one that offers full sun to partial shade with some protection from the wind.

Soil

Enjoys a well drained, slightly acidic, organic rich soil. Prepare the soil with well-rotted animal manure or a complete fertiliser before planting.

Fertilise

Fertilise regularly during spring with a complete fertiliser.

Watering

Water regularly during the warmer months.

Pruning

Prune plants down to ground level once the foliage has died off completely, but no earlier. Bulbs can be left in the ground to naturalise for several years without having to transplant them. If you are planning to lift and separate your bulbs, this should be done in autumn. Replant without delay. Liliums dislike being moved and wet feet.
They are generally pest resistant; aphids may be a problem but easily dealt with.
