Description

Dahlias are celebrated as the garden stars, producing lavish blooms amidst lush foliage that can anchor any outdoor space beautifully. Perfect for garden beds or sizeable pots, these flowers boast intricate petal patterns and a vibrant array of colours, adaptable to any garden design. Dahlia varieties vary greatly in height, with taller ones benefiting from staking to ensure upright growth.

Each dahlia variety has unique characteristics and climate preferences, generally thriving in climates with adequate sunlight (6-8 hours per day) and light shade, along with well-drained soil and temperatures conducive to their growth and flowering habits. In regions prone to frost, it’s essential to protect dahlias by applying a layer of mulch and relocating them to a dry area during winter to encourage healthier growth. In hot climates, planting dahlia tubers where they get sufficient morning sun and afternoon shade ensures they perform optimally, producing high-quality blooms.

Dahlias are typically planted in the spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Plant dahlias when the soil temperature reaches around 15°C or warmer, as warmer soil temperatures promote faster root growth and establishment. In warmer climates where winters are mild, dahlias can also be planted in autumn for late winter to spring blooming.

Fortunately, numerous dahlia varieties thrive in containers, making them perfect for brightening up patios and balconies with vibrant bursts of colour. When planting in pots, ensure good drainage by using containers at least 30cm in diameter, providing ample space for tuber growth. Use a high-quality potting mix and add a slow-release fertiliser to encourage robust flowering. For garden beds, opt for nutrient-rich soil enriched with well-rotted organic compost, manure, and leaf mold. Dahlias, in particular, thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline soils, so adding lime to acidic soils is very beneficial. This soil should also retain moisture effectively while avoiding waterlogging, creating an ideal environment for dahlias to flourish and bloom beautifully.

While dahlias can thrive when left undisturbed for extended periods, dividing and lifting tubers every second winter is beneficial, especially in damp soil conditions, to prevent tuber rot. Dahlias are typically divided during the dormant season in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. This timing allows tubers to be separated and replanted before they resume active growth.

When lifting dahlias for storage, start by carefully digging around the clump using a garden fork or spade, beginning about 30 centimetres away from the centre to avoid damaging the tubers. Lift the clump gently, shaking off excess soil while leaving some attached. Trim the foliage to about 15 centimetres above the tubers and allow them to dry in a sheltered, dry spot for a couple of days to naturally shed soil. Once dahlias have dried, trim the stems down to 2.5-5 centimetres. Inspect the tubers for any signs of damage, discarding any unhealthy ones. If the clump is large, divide it carefully, ensuring each section has a healthy tuber and eye. To prevent dahlias from drying out during storage or in hot weather, place them in a medium that retains moisture, such as slightly dampened peat moss, sawdust, or vermiculite, in a cool (4-10°C), dark, dry, and well-ventilated location. Periodically check the tubers, removing any decaying ones promptly. Lightly mist the storage medium if it begins to dry out, avoiding overwatering. In dry climates, consider using a humidity tray or placing a nearby water bowl to maintain humidity levels around the dahlias. Minimise handling to reduce stress on both the tubers and stems, ensuring your dahlias remain healthy and ready for planting in the next growing season.

Monitor for pests and diseases like aphids and powdery mildew, employing natural methods or pesticides as needed.

Important Note: While we aim to provide accurate representations of our products, factors such as climate, natural variations, or manufacturing updates can impact the exact appearance of each variety. The images usually feature mature specimens, while the supplied stock contains dormant tubers that will develop over time. Please use the images as a general guide, considering that the pack may also include the same colour and tuber variety.

How to Plant

Plant the tuber around 10cm deep, with the growing tip a little under the soil surface facing up, and then water them in well. If you’re looking to plant a few of them, it is important that you are planting dahlia tubers at a density of around 60cm apart. Tall varieties will need staking and you can do this at planting time to minimise damage to the tubers.

Soil

Dahlia tubers flourish in well-drained, organic-rich, neutral, or alkaline soil. Adding lime to acidic soils can be highly beneficial. Ensure the soil maintains good drainage while retaining moisture for optimal dahlia growth.

Watering

Except in very dry conditions, water your dahlias lightly until the plants have grown to around 15cm high, as an excess of water can cause the tubers to rot before they’ve had an opportunity to grow.
Once your dahlias have reached over 15cm, it is important to keep the soil moderately moist, watering them once or twice a week. Be cautious not to over-water, as this can lead to rot. Wilted leaves often indicate under-watering.

Pruning

Dahlias thrive when regularly picked, so removing spent flowers will stimulate further blooming.
In cooler areas, mulch to protect from frost once plants become dormant. This will help extend their flowering season.

Fertilising

Dahlias benefit from regular feeding. Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser at planting time and consider a liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season.
